Orchard Hills Golf Club Review
by John Kim
Located just off Interstate 85, about 40 minutes south of Atlanta, is one of Metro Atlanta's true golf gems. Twenty-seven holes of golf, where the course conditions, amenities, staff, and pace of play are among the best you'll find anywhere.
Setting up your round: Call ahead to make sure they are not hosting some type of tournament (they really excel at group outings and thus, host several). Otherwise, finding a time to go out is as easy as any in the city. With three separate nine hole layouts, they do an excellent job of spacing out players and working in groups throughout the day. The phone number to the pro shop is (770) 251 5683. If you can, plan your day to play at least 27 holes. You can often play 27 in the time it would take you to play 18 elsewhere.
When you arrive: Driving range, putting green, grill area with seating, they have it all. I did not see a beverage cart on the course (but it was a Monday), and you come back to the clubhouse every nine holes as it is.
Favorite Hole: #1 on the Orchard layout is a short par 5 that requires you to carry a tee shot at least 150 yards and after that (barring a major hook or slice), does not offer you much resistance to a good score. There is one bunker to the front left of this green, but avoiding it should not be too difficult, whether you're going for the green in two or three shots. Every one in my group reached this green in two shots. We all three putted for par also. Still, it's a very fun hole.
Least Favorite: Logo nine, #7 is a long par 4 that requires a long drive up the right side of the fairway. You can lose golf balls left or right (literally, lose) and have to trek back to the tee to try the shot again. The green is then downhill from the fairway with little room to miss on any side other than short.
Overall: First of all, forget any ideas that you have heard about this course being "wide open" and "having no trouble off the tee". You'll lose more golf balls on this course than you will at 75% of other courses. That being said, it's one of the more enjoyable golf experiences you will have in our community. The three nines really make a difference as far as pace of play goes, and the course is almost always in superb condition. I highly recommend you find out for yourself why Orchard Hills is one of our city's best golf facilities.
