Wood Review: Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead

by John Kim

Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead I've always subscribed to the adage, "If it isn't broke, don't fix it." So why did Callaway take the most successful woods of all time and scrap them in favor of the new look steelheads? Well, I'm sure the gurus at Callaway know more about golf and the market than I do, but they didn't impress me much with the move. The heads are a bit smaller, but I really miss the v-shaped sole plate that made getting the ball up so easy with the old berthas.

The Good: Pretty forgiving clubs, you won't duff too many with these.

The Bad: The balls don't go as far or as accurate as the old Berthas.

Overall: Taken as a whole, these are not bad clubs. In fact, they are of course quite good. But I don't think they measure up to the standard Callaway has set for itself, and I went out of my way to find an old warbird for my utility wood. I could not be happier with that find.
